Nick Greer knows circuits and dirt. And when this man has a pedal in his arsenal that is so good that it begs a clone of not just the pedal itself, but of this exact version, you know it’s going to be good. And it is. This pedal is the Foxx Tone Machine, and it has been deconstructed and dissected to bring you this: the Super Hornet.
At its center, the Super Hornet is a vintage transistor-equipped harmonic rich fuzzbox that scratches that vintage fuzz itch. Before we even get into the toggle switch or footswitch, let’s talk about that tone.
Before switches get involved, the Super Hornet is a smooth, velvety fuzz machine whose Volume knob ranges from nothing to punishing, and whose Tone knob is actually usable at every spot. Fully counter-clockwise gives a dark, brooding distorted sound while fully clockwise spits high end without being icepicky or harsh.
Things get really interesting when we take a look at the Stinger toggle and its accompanying footswitch. The toggle has two positions: On and Stinger. When set to On, you’ve officially poked the nest—the Hornet launches into an upper-octave swarming frenzy with stingers bared. Of course, this is only below the 12th fret. Playing above fret 12 will make harmonically-rich, ring mod-tinged octaves leap out without much distortion at all. This is enhanced by playing on a neck pickup with the guitar’s tone knob down.
Switched into Stinger mode arms the octave-up to the accompanying footswitch. The footswitch is momentary, so it only works when it’s being pressed. This mode is perfect for players wanting to add a peppering of octave-up tones to a passage or solo. Now you can seamlessly switch between a raging fuzz and its unruly octave-up brother for as long as you’d like.
Of course, no vintage fuzz worth its salt would be complete without a set of vintage components. In the Hornet’s case, Nick Greer chose to install a grip of new-old-stock BC-107B transistors for a little extra kick—off-the-shelf semiconductors simply won’t do.
