Wildwood Guitars is proud to present the newest entry in our Wildwood 10 Artisan Select series: the Quilted Maple Stratocaster! These delectable Custom Shop creations have a lot going on, but let’s focus on the tops, because that’s certainly what everyone does whenever they see one of these guitars! In fact, when we received the first examples of these guitars, our morning meeting came to a grinding halt so that we could all ogle their gorgeous AA quilted maple tops. But what makes these guitars head-turners is also what gives them substance. Quilted varieties of maple still impart the crisp, articulate tone the wood is known for, but they have a slightly warmer tone than standard cuts. This clear, snappy tone works in concert with the roasted ash body to create a truly spectacular-sounding instrument. Roasted ash has a warmer tone than regular ash, and it’s also livelier and more resonant—just like a vintage guitar! When you combine this vintage-style tone with the dash of special sauce the quilted maple provides, you get a Strat that sounds like nothing else! Of course, no one can hear how great the tonewoods are without killer electronics, so we asked Fender to put handwound pickups designed by Master Builder John Cruz in these guitars. When these spectacular single-coils join forces with these resonant bodies, they produce a singular electric guitar sound with vintage warmth and modern clarity. These amazing Artisans are also a joy to play thanks to their comfy C-shaped ’63 Strat-style neck profiles—just don’t look down, or you might get distracted by how pretty the roasted AAA birdseye maple looks! The African blackwood fingerboard also looks as cool as the underside of the pillow, and it has a smooth, rigid feel that makes your fingers feel like they can fly. Gold hardware and a gold anodized pickguard are just the icing on the cake!
