The innovation of Electro-Harmonix is so great that sometimes the company will release a really great stompbox that seems poised to take over pedalboards everywhere, and then you find out they actually released the original 35 years earlier.
The Crash Pad is a self-described "electronic crash drum," but what that really means is that it can make all sorts of sounds from snare drums, hi hats, the eponymous crash cymbal and any kind of outer-space alien calls you can dream of.
The reissue is faithful to the original, with an added Volume control for obvious reasons. One of the main draws to the Crash Pad is the filter section, with controls for Resonance and Decay. An Aux[iliary] In jack lets you process external sounds through this juicy filter, so the Crash Pad isn't just for making textures.
An Ext[ternal] Trig[ger] jack allows players to set up his or her own heavy-duty stomp switch to really let the percussion fly whenever they see fit. An expression pedal can also be connected, and there is none finer than the 8 Step Program or Clockworks for some sequenced filtering. Of course, a standard expression pedal can also be used.
