Lets talk . . . amps, for a second.
What do you think of when you hear a tube amp? We think of massive amounts of gain slamming into each other and creating this explosion of harmonics and overdrive that we’ve come to know and love. You know what we don’t think of? Clipping diodes.
Why are we telling you this? The Lunastone drive pedals—dubbed True OverDrive—accomplish their gain structures using the same method as a tube amp—several cascading gain stages with the only natural compression occurring as a result of the inherent parts, with nary a diode to be found. Clipping diodes intentionally lop off the peaks of you guitar’s signal.
The Lunastone Big Fella has no such thing. It’s a very natural-sounding, harmonically-rich overdrive that gives a subtle mid-boost, much like a British amplifier does. The circuit is bombarded with gain stages until the final one achieves a snowball effect of overdrive, which exits the pedal with some serious tonal weight.
Two modes are available on the Big Fella, named simply “OD1” and “OD2.” Each represents a level of gain, crunch and added harmonics. OD1 is a lighter, touch-sensitive, more transparent drive with a pronounced mid push. OD2 is a higher-gain tone with some serious crunch.
An independently switchable Boost mode gooses your amp with an extra 15 decibels of gain, but you may choose to integrate it into your base tone as it makes for a crystalline preamp that brings your guitar to life.
When the two circuits are combined, your amp is but an innocent bystander in its path, and the front end of your loudbox crumbles spectactularly, easing the preamp into sweet, sweet meltdown that sounds, and more importantly, feels natural.
