The Limited Edition Plexi Combo You've Been Waiting For
The Sweetwater Exclusive Marshall 1974X "Final Curtain" Limited Edition 18-watt handwired tube combo is a small-batch run of only eight units — with grille cloths made from a red velvet curtain that adorned the Marshall factory music hall for decades! The look may be different, but the sound is classic. When guitarists talk about the sweet "Plexi" tones of '60s rock, they're talking about the sounds produced by coveted vintage Marshalls such as the 1974 combo that was made from 1966 to '68. Exalted for half a century, the venerable all-tube 1974 circuit roars to life with a unique and responsive character that begs to be played. Handwired by the master builders at Marshall for optimum tone and incredibly reliable performance, the 1974X "Final Curtain" features two channels and a specially aged Celestion Greenback 12" speaker. So just plug in and start your own rock revolution. The 1974X "Final Curtain" is only available at Sweetwater — and supplies are extremely limited — so you'd better reserve yours now! A handwired Marshall icon The Handwired Series was created to pay homage to historical Marshall amps that, for many players, represent the ultimate in organic, all-valve guitar tone. The primary objective was to achieve maximum authenticity in terms of components, circuitry, construction methods, materials, specifications, aesthetics, signal path, performance, tonal characteristics, and feel. All of the original components and materials were used or reproduced, and the original methods of construction employed in the late 1960s were revisited. The custom-built replica transformers have been meticulously re-created by the renowned Dagnall Electronics, and each amplifier's handwired turret board is a model of point-to-point perfection. And while on the subject of handcrafting, this Limited Edition 1974X is clad in red velvet, hand-stitched from a curtain recovered from the theater at Marshall, which is being transformed into a world-class recording studio. The Music Hall at the Marshall factory Authentic reissue of a classic Save for its velvet-clad exterior, the 1974X is a meticulous reissue of the fabled model 1974 combo of the late sixties. Just like the original, it boasts a point-to-point, handwired, tagboard circuit housed in a closed-ended, butt-jointed aluminum chassis, plus a valve-driven tremolo circuit. At the very heart of its simple yet effective 2-channel design can be found six tubes: three ECC83s in the preamp, an EZ81 rectifier, and a pair of cathode biased EL84s in the output stage. As the output and mains transformers are vital components that influence performance, sound, and feel; Marshall worked extremely closely with their associates at Dagnall in order to re-create the original, off-the-shelf transformers. Two bridgeable channels Just like the original, the 1974X "Final Curtain" sports two non-footswitchable channels. Each channel has high- and low-sensitivity inputs to accommodate a variety of guitar pickups. A favorite trick of many guitarists is to "jump" the two channels using a patch cable: plug your guitar into the top input of channel one, then connect a patch cable from channel one's bottom input to the top input of channel two. This allows you to gang both gain stages in each channel for even more tonal versatility. Aged Greenback T1221 speaker A contributing sonic factor in vintage 1974 combos is the way the sound of the Celestion Greenback speaker softens with age. For the 1974X reissues — including the Limited Edition "Final Curtain" model — Celestion revisited the recipe for the original Greenback T1221 speaker to create a spot-on reissue, and then subjected it to a proprietary aging process. The result is a new speaker only found in a select few Marshall amps.
