Sweetwater-exclusive Hand-wired Fuzz from JHS
The JHS 1966 is loaded with the most iconic fuzz circuit ever made — the Arbiter Fuzz Face. But, unlike the original, it won’t hog your entire pedalboard. This isn’t an approximation — it’s the real deal. Park it in front of a dimed amp, and sweet, fat, cacophony will ensue. The 1966 Fuzz was hand-wired by JHS founder, Josh Scott, using his own stash of NOS parts. If want to experience authentic Hendrix-ian fuzz tones, this germanium-based pedal delivers the goods. The JHS 1966 Fuzz is available in a highly limited supply. Arbiter Fuzz Face — a brief history The JHS 1966 Fuzz is a spot-on re-creation of the original Arbiter Fuzz Face — the most iconic fuzz in history. And it’s easily recognizable, thanks to its round, “smiley face” enclosure (allegedly inspired by the circular base of a mic stand). The original pedal was released in 1966, just in time for the recording of Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced?. It has also been used by the likes of David Gilmour, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many others. The Fuzz Face was released mere months after the Sola Sound Tonebender 1.5, and uses a near-identical circuit. In fact, the original Fuzz Face manual even calls it a “battery-powered tone-bending unit.” With only two transistors, three capacitors, and a handful of resistors, the Fuzz Face houses a simple circuit, yet the resultant sound is the Holy Grail of fuzz-based distortion. Built from real-deal NOS parts for authentic sound JHS founder, Josh Scott, hand-built each 1966 Fuzz out of high-quality NOS components. He used high-grade carbon composition resistors, oversized capacitors, and two germanium transistors that he hand-matched to the pedal’s circuit. Due to the scarcity of parts, each small batch of 1966 Fuzzes employs different transistors, giving them a subtly different sound. Likewise, the inconsistent nature of germanium will result in slight sonic variations between pedals. It was for this reason that Jimi Hendrix used to rifle through an entire case of Fuzz Faces to find the one he liked best. The 1966 Fuzz is a meticulous re-creation of the original Fuzz Face. That said, Josh adjusted the taper of the 1966’s pots to feel more intuitive, added a single power supply filter capacitor to minimize noise, tweaked one resistor value for extra volume, and added true-bypass switching. Pro Tips from Sweetwater: The pedal’s circuit employs vintage positive ground voltage, so don’t daisy-chain its power with other pedals Be sure to place this pedal first in your signal chain. Your guitar must be plugged into its input due to the impedance it requires — no exceptions JHS 1966 Fuzz Pedal Features: Meticulous re-creation of the Arbiter Fuzz Face circuit Hand-wired by JHS founder, Josh Scott, using his own stash of NOS parts A top choice for authentic Hendrix-ian fuzz tones Housed in a standard-sized, pedalboard-friendly enclosure Contains high-grade carbon composition resistors, oversized capacitors, and germanium transistors Optimized potentiometers are more intuitive than the original Fuzz Face Runs on battery power or via an isolated power supply with a standard polarity power cable Single power supply filter capacitor minimizes noise Tweaked resistor value delivers extra volume True-bypass switching keeps your signal pure when not in use Available in a highly limited supply Tech Specs Pedal Type: Fuzz Analog/Digital: Analog Inputs: 1 x 1/4" Outputs: 1 x 1/4" True Bypass: Yes Features: Handwired by Josh Scott Power Source: 9V DC Isolated power supply required (sold separately) Batteries: 1 x 9V Manufacturer Part Number: JHS 1966 Fuzz THSS:www.music-blvd.com 399USD (D) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
