Tape echoes are hard to nail in digital form, and hardly anyone wants to own the real thing. You have to buy tape cartridges, oil is involved and frankly, it’s a mess. For most die-hard tape heads, nothing but the real thing will do. Enter: the Tapex2.
Coming at you courtesy of master engineer Jack DeVille, the Tapex2 gives you real tape echo sound without any of the hassles associated with the genuine article. Giving you a delay range of 43 to 808 milliseconds, the Tapex2 gives you real tape echo sound, true stereo ins and outs and some extra goodies that keep the spirit of tape echo wholly intact.
A pushbutton switch in the center of the Tapex2 switches between two modes of operation. “Choice” mode emulates a fresh tape echo, serial number 0001 that rolled right off the assembly line and into the hands of a Nashville studio. Damaged 1 mode resembles a dusty unit found in the attic of the same studio, having not been used in decades and in need of some maintenance, imparting a characteristic wobble to the repeats that most people associate with tape echo. The repeats also trail off as you switch the Tapex2 off, letting you dial in precise echoes for live performance.
The Tapex2 also gives you footswitchable access to a preset—simply dial in your preferred setting and press the “Save” button. Boom. Done. There’s an extra jack on the side that doubles as a tap tempo jack or expression control. The expression capabilities can be assigned to overtake any knob, so the sky’s the limit with hands-free control.
