While many companies in today's scene have been scrambling to adapt the sound of particular amps to the pedal format, several have developed so much focus that they are met with diminishing returns. Subdecay has erased all that and went back to the drawing board. Instead of coming up with an "[X] amp in a box," Subdecay thought, "what if we just made AN amp—the amp of your dreams, whatever that is."

Enter: the Variac. The team of toneheads at Subdecay have developed a pedal that behaves the way YOU want. You, the player, has control over preamp saturation, power amp saturation (Pentodes), and a switch that switches between two (analog) phase inverter tube simulations—Cathodyne and LTP or "Long Tail Pair." A two-band EQ rounds out the pedal's features. You'll find that the Variac is one of the most accurate tube amp simulations on the market.

The Variac is wired for true bypass and is powered by a standard 2.1mm center-negative Boss-style power jack. Although the pedal can run find on nine volts, Subdecay recommends running the pedal between 7.5 to 18 volts. The company claims the sweet spot is "up to 15 volts."
