Limited-edition Tribute to Grateful Dead’s American Beauty
The D’Angelico Premier Grateful Dead SS celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Dead’s studio masterpiece, American Beauty. Taking cues from friends Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, American Beauty eschewed the band’s typical psychedelic excursions for acoustic instrumentation, folk-tinged melodies, and sweet vocal harmonies. It also spawned one of the band's best-known songs, “Truckin’,” which contains the popular refrain: “What a long, strange trip it’s been.” Befitting the LP's legacy, the Premier Grateful Dead SS is an attention-grabbing single-cutaway semi-hollowbody electric with classic-voiced Seymour Duncan Designed humbuckers and a comfortable 3-piece set-in neck. And of course, it features custom American Beauty-inspired artwork. This Premier SS deftly covers American Beauty’s far-reaching sonic territory, making it ideal for country, blues, rock, and much more. But act now: the Premier Grateful Dead SS is limited to only 380 instruments available. Top-shelf tonewoods yield top-shelf hollowbody tones The Premier Grateful Dead SS features a resonant all-maple semi-hollowbody with a comfortable single-cut shape. As a tonewood, maple positively shouts, yielding a bright tone with long sustain and plenty of bite. This bell-like tone enables your notes to spring to life, then gently decay into a long sustain — perfect for lead lines and solos. A solid center block effectively keeps feedback at bay. The Premier Grateful Dead SS’s set-through maple-walnut neck not only lends incredible sustain to your playing, but it also adds a bit of snap to your tone. The neck is capped with an ovangkol fingerboard, which yields a smooth feel and warm tonality. Seymour Duncan Designed pickups deliver classic humbucking tones The D’Angelico Premier Grateful Dead SS comes loaded with a set of Seymour Duncan Designed humbuckers. These vintage-inspired pickups deliver warm, full-bodied humbucking tone with crystalline clarity. This potent sonic elixir is routed through a 3-way toggle switch and volume and tone controls. And if that wasn't enough, a push-pull tone knob yields coil-tapped tones with lower output and single-coil-like texture. From jazz and fusion to blues, rock, and country; from chimey rhythm parts to blistering leads — and everything in between — the D’Angelico Premier Grateful Dead SS delivers. The D’Angelico legacy After mastering his craft during an 18-year apprenticeship, luthier John D’Angelico opened his shop in Manhattan’s Little Italy in 1932. Catering to New York’s many jazz musicians over the ensuing three decades, D’Angelico and a single apprentice became New York’s foremost stringed-instrument builders, creating over 1,000 treasured archtop guitars until John’s death in 1964. After his passing, D’Angelico’s legacy lived on only through his rare, legendary instruments. After decades, the D’Angelico brand has resurfaced, bringing back the playability and attention to detail of the company’s New York roots. Today, Sweetwater is delighted to offer this fine line of distinguished instruments. D’Angelico uses state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and the finest available materials to create playable works of art for today’s guitarist. From a modest shop in Little Italy to the world stage, D’Angelico’s dedication to quality craftsmanship ensures that this brand won’t be going dormant again any time soon.
