Of all the Big Muff variants out there, and how many have been rebooted, there is no longer uncharated territory in North America (or Russia for that matter). No, in order to disvocer new Muff frontiers, we must set sail for the Far East, land of the Elk Super Fuzz Sustainar.
Wait, "Sustainar"? No way. Actually, yes way. Back in the '70s, when the Muff captured the hearts and minds of many, Japan was cranking out Muff clones, some even called "Big Muff." These clones were often built with B-grade parts, lending a distinct ragged edge to the sound. And so, we find ourselves with the White Elk from Wren and Cuff.
The parts in the original Elks didn't age gracefully, and so they essentially created a brand new Muff circuit. Fans of the band Boris should look no further, as both Wata and Takeshi relied on Elks for their huge riffage.
Soundwise, the Elk delivers a hefty helping of mids, which is something almost every Muff variant lacks. Because the Elk is a distressed copy of a "triangle" Muff, it delivers the beefy low end you've come to expect from the circuit.
Most importantly, the fuzz character of the Elk is unique, providing a generous portion of gaudy crunchy fuzz that just doesn't exist outside of the Elk's body. If you're looking for a unique addition to your Muff collection, it may be time to head out and bag yourself an Elk.
