A Tube DI That Feels Like Your Trusty AmpThe Hazelrigg Industries VDI vacuum tube DI sounds and feels like your beloved old amp, not a sterile direct box. Through the VDI, you’ll bask in the sonic warmth and the harmonic richness of your electric bass, guitar, keyboard, modular synth, or any acoustic instrument with a pickup. And it will inspire your playing, too. Designed for professional recording without the limitations of passive transformer-style direct boxes, the VDI can handle any instrument that you would normally plug into a guitar, bass, or keyboard amp while providing optimal load impedance for superior reproduction over a broad range of instrument levels. Meticulously handcrafted in the USA using top-drawer components such as a custom Jensen output transformer and encased in a 1/4-inch-thick aluminum plate, the Hazelrigg Industries VDI is built for the long haul. It may well be the last DI you ever purchase! The quest for the ultimate direct boxSince the 1960s, recording engineers have sought sonically superior methods for direct injection of electric bass, guitars, and other instruments that normally plug into an amp. The tradeoffs usually involved settling for a relatively dry and lifeless sound in the interest of eliminating room leakage — with the exception of a few innovative proprietary designs. (Hello, Motown!) The Hazelrigg Industries VDI Vacuum Tube DI is one such inspired design. Through its all-tube circuitry and Jensen transformer-balanced output, electric basses sound vibrant, fat, and punchy. Electric guitars — which typically do not fare well when taken direct — sound (and just as importantly, respond) like they’re plugged into a good tube guitar amp. Seamlessly interfaces with any setupHazelrigg Industries designed the VDI to interface seamlessly with modern pro setups, both in the studio and on the road. Whether you’re laying down tracks or mixing front-of-house, the single-channel VDI delivers a user-friendly “hot” mic-level output of -30dBm (nominal) that plays nice with professional 150 ohm mic inputs. As you would expect, the VDI is equipped with a Thru jack wired in parallel to the unbalanced input for connection to, for instance, a bass or guitar amp. A ground switch and the main transformer-balanced XLR output round out the connections panel; on the other end are a standard IEC mains socket, the power switch, and a 115V/230V mains selector. Both end panels are recessed, offering a degree of protection for settings and connectors. Built for years of dependable serviceHazelrigg Industries uses only the finest components throughout the VDI, with both the filament and the plate power supplies being fully regulated for tour-tough dependability. The casing is machined from a solid 1/4-inch-thick aluminum plate and fashioned into a sleek design that slips into your gig bag for immediate deployment. And as with all Hazelrigg Industries gear, the VDI is scrupulously bench tested for optimum performance and reliability before leaving the factory. For additional peace of mind, it includes Hazelrigg Industries’ limited 7-year warranty (90 days for vacuum tubes). With its alluringly amp-like sound and rock-solid build quality, musicians and engineers at Sweetwater are quite taken with the VDI. You will be, too!
