Hot-rodded Boutique EL84 Quad BurnerThe EL84 valve is one of the cornerstones of rock. Artfully employed in the output section of a guitar amp, it exhibits an unmistakable chimey jangle at cleaner settings and a sweet expressiveness in the middle of its gain range. Push it further to elicit iconic bark, bite, and bratty breakup. Crank it, and your guitar roars and soars as with no other tube. Along with its big-bottle cousin, the EL34, the EL84 drove the British invasion of the ’60s and has been deployed in countless guitar amplifier designs over the ensuing decades. One of the most compelling implementations we’ve had the pleasure to put through the paces is an amp head by Victory Amplification. It’s called V35 The Copper, and it’s a powerful, versatile little beast that all EL84 fans would do well to check out. At 35 watts, it’s quite loud and ideal for club and studio work; and weighing in at a scant 18.1 pounds, it’s effortless to haul around. V35 The Copper’s price is lightweight, too — especially considering its boutique design, excellent craftsmanship, and amazing tone. Incredibly versatile, with prodigious chime and gainA well-designed tube amp is an organic, living thing that breathes life into your music. V35 The Copper fits this description perfectly, serving up a delectable tone banquet that ranges from glassy cleans to bone-rattling crunch — with a healthy reserve of more aggressive high-gain tones on tap. A master-volume design with a separate gain pot that’s highly interactive with the tone controls, this all-tube guitar amp head will please both traditionalists and (moderate) gainiacs. And while we certainly wouldn’t call it a “metal” amp, you’ll find V35 The Copper works as brilliantly for scorching jazz fusion as it does for classic rock, blues, country, and pop. It’s also extremely responsive to your pick attack and it cleans up beautifully with a glancing counterclockwise twist on your guitar’s volume knob. Packing four EL84s, the V35 has the juice to drive a range of cabinets — we’d recommend checking out Victory’s smart-looking, Celestion-loaded matching cabs. It’s fitted with flexible speaker outputs on the rear panel that can accommodate a mix of 8- and 16-ohm cabinets. Tons of tone-sculpting controlThis hot-rodded four-banger sounds sultry and throaty with humbuckers and responds with sparkling chime to single-coils, but it’s extensively tweakable, with a control set that includes a Bass Cut switch that lets you instantly tighten up the low end. Working in tandem with the Bass EQ pot, this switch not only gives you more headroom at higher gain settings, but it also effectively lets you revoice your humbuckers to sound more like P-90s, or even conventional single-coils. A pair of 12AX7 tubes drive the V35’s preamp stage — no surprise there; but in a fresh twist, a new-old-stock, mil-spec Mullard EF184 drives the tone stack. (If you’re uneasy about having a NOS tube in your amp, you can rest assured: the company has secured a hefty supply of EF184s — all top-quality, with very low microphonics.) Giving you tons of tone-shaping control over critical midrange voicing is a Mid Boost switch that works interactively with the Middle EQ pot. Treble EQ rounds out the tone stack. But V35 The Copper has another ace up its sleeve: a master Tone cut. This immensely useful control affords you a final, global tonal tweak without having to mess with the sound you’ve already sculpted (almost) to perfection. Onstage or in the studio, you’ll come to appreciate V35 The Copper’s truly impressive tweakability. Dual power, Reverb, FX Loop, and moreVictory Amplification outfitted V35 The Copper with a low-power setting, available from the front panel. Once you’ve preheated the tubes with this switch in the up position, flip it down and you have a very manageable 12 watts for late-night practice or studio work. At 12 watts, it’s still pretty loud, though — something to keep in mind if you have persnickety flatmates or neighbors. Also onboard V35 The Copper is digital Reverb (always nice to have on hand) and a series FX Loop (both are footswitch-controllable). When you’re running your amp at higher gain settings, you’ll get cleaner results by plugging in your time-based effects, such as reverbs and delays, through the loop. For classic cleans, run your effects into the front end. Modern tube amps are much more user-friendly than they used to be, and the V35 is no exception. Where changing tubes used to be fraught with trepidation, guitarists can now simply use the Bias Test Points and Bias Adjust pot on the V35’s rear panel to optimize replacement tube bias quickly and safely.
