An Analog Laboratory for Sonic ExperimentationThe mad scientists at Erica Synths are all about pushing the boundaries of sonic experimentation. The fruits of their labor consistently result in groundbreaking modular units and effects devices designed to inspire ecstatic creativity. Designed in collaboration with engineers at Riga Technical University, the Erica Synths Syntrx is purposely built to encourage sound designers to rethink how they approach synthesis. Fully modular, Syntrx requires you to dive into its 256-point patch matrix to construct patches with Rube Goldberg-esque levels of complexity from familiar analog componentry, including three VCOs, a resonant VCF, a trapezoid envelope generator, and a solid selection of modulation sources. Synthesists at Sweetwater were enamored by the Syntrx at first listen, and they continue to be stunned by the vastness of its creative possibilities. Inspired by the design of the EMI Synthi AKS, a pioneering matrix synth, the Erica Synths Syntrx looks almost like something you would find in a nuclear submarine. But, it’s not just science — this bespoke analog synth makes spectacular music! Three ultra-fat voltage-controlled oscillatorsThe Erica Synths Syntrx is loaded with three ultra-fat analog oscillators, each with a few unique characteristics. Oscillator 1 generates adjustable sine and sawtooth waveforms, with individual signal level control for each shape and a +/–1 octave switch. Oscillator 2 offers square and triangle waveshapes, which are also manually adjustable and have independent signal level controls. This oscillator can operate in two modes: free-running mode, which opens up the Syntrx to paraphonic performances, and oscillator sync mode, which lets you further shape the timbre of the VCOs. Oscillator 3 serves up the same waveshapes as Oscillator 2, but it primarily functions as an LFO that’s available on the patch matrix; however, it can be set to key follow for adding some girth to a bass patch. Distinctive trapezoid looping envelope generatorThe Syntrx’s trapezoid looping envelope generator module takes its name and inspiration from the EMS Synthi AKS. According to Erica Synths, EMS chose the name trapezoid because the shape of the 3-stage envelope resembled a trapeze. The trapezoid module has two modes: Attack/Decay (AD) and Attack/Sustain/Release (ASR). AD mode is ideal for creating snappy, percussive sounds, and ASR gives you expanded control over shaping the envelope. Trapezoid has a built-in voltage-controlled amplifier, and it can be outputted as a CV signal to modulate other sections of the synth. Massive modulation with Noise Generator, Sample & Hold, and Ring ModFor further explorations in modulation, Syntrx includes a full-spectrum diode-based white Noise Generator with a Colour knob for emphasizing the high or low frequencies of the signal. Synthesists at Sweetwater are impressed by its lush sound, which excels at adding grit to patches or for creating percussive hi-hat sounds and cascading waves of noise. Syntrx’s Sample & Hold module produces stepped control voltages that can generate predictable staircase modulations when synced to VCO3 or random S&H chaos when synced to the Noise Generator. Additionally, Syntrx includes a surprisingly powerful single-knob Ring Mod module capable of emitting clangorous metallic tones or adding subtle harmonic richness to a patch. Incredible tone shaping with resonant VCF and output filtersThe diode-based Filter/Oscillator module on Syntrx is supremely smooth, but it has a pleasant raspiness that imbues filter sweeps with depth and texture. When its resonance is pushed to the limit, it transforms into a pure sinewave, with a squelching, extra-terrestrial wail. But, Syntrx has another tone shaper up its sleeve: a tilt-EQ-style Output Filter on each of its output channels. These controls let you put the final touches on a patch, by bumping up either the high or low frequencies with the twist of a single knob. Powerful 256-point patch matrix with recallWhile Syntrx takes many of its cues from old-school analog modular synths, its highly advanced patch matrix is definitely new-school! To promote sonic experimentation, the patch matrix boasts 256 possible patch points, allowing for mind-bogglingly complex routing. But, unlike traditional modular synths that use physical cables to make patches, Syntrx’s patch matrix is digitally controlled — and recallable! That’s right, Syntrx provides 254 memory slots, accessible right from the patch matrix, so you’ll never have to say goodbye to a brilliant patch. Simply hit save, use the XY encoders to select a point on the matrix on which to assign it, and voilà, your preset is held in perpetuity. Atmospheric built-in spring reverb with feedback controlYou won’t find any DSP-powered effects on Syntrx, but what you will find is a true spring reverb unit. Washy and vibey, Syntrx’s spring reverb soaks your synth concoctions in a lush atmosphere, and you can even (carefully!) strike the unit for the awesome splash effect popularized by surf guitarists in the 1960s. Even cooler, the spring reverb includes a feedback control that can drive the spring into self-oscillation for a haunting howl. Manipulate parameters with a joystick controllerFor an extra spark of creativity, Syntrx features an XY joystick controller you can map to numerous parameters via the patch matrix. Alter the pitch of the oscillators, control filter cutoff, ride the VCA gain, and more — all by using the joystick. On top of the other assignable expression controllers, including pitch and mod wheel from your MIDI keyboard, the joystick invites hands-on playing, making the Syntrx as much of a live performance instrument as it is a stunning sound design tool Erica Synths Syntrx Analog Synthesizer Features:
