The lore of the Fender Esquire is well-known—Leo Fender’s first
marketed design, originally released in 1950, heard on all your favorite
recordings from the 50s, 60s, and beyond. Fender Custom Shop is
putting the Esquire right back into your hands with the 1959 Esquire
Relic, an instrument that is tonally faithful to the original
single-pickup Esquire introduced in the 50s.
The Fender Custom Shop 1959 Esquire Relic has an alder body for beefy
mids and lows, finished in a tastefully aged relic Surf Green laquer
finish to suggest an instrument that has been gently used for at least a
few decades. A hand selected rosewood fingerboard with 9.5” radius and
21 medium jumbo frets is a delight to play and allows you to bend
notes with clarity all the way up the neck. Fender Custom Shop’s
Twisted Tele single coil pickup in the bridge gives you the classic Tele
punch with a more bell-like, balanced tone.
An added bonus, the ’59 Esquire gets the Eldred Esquire mod. Mike
Eldred from Fender Custom Shop devised a clever way to wire a 3-position
switch into this single-pickup guitar: position one sends the pickup
output straight to the volume control and bypasses the tone circuit;
position two routs the signal through the tone control (a Grease Bucket
circuit); position 3 bypasses the tone control in favor of a smaller
capacitor that provides a remarkably accurate Strat tone.
