El Musico Loco 74 Overdrive

MY friend Michel found a little orange overdrive pedal at the flea
market one day for 7 bucks and brought it to me when it didn’t work. We
hooked up a few broken wires and pleaded with me to put a power jack in
it. I talked him out of drilling any holes in it and when we plugged it
in I fell in love. What a beautiful sounding pedal. Later on it was Joe
who suggested I build one. He got one of the first two loved it so here
we are. Thanks Joe! I have removed the in/out buffers and added true
by-pass, grounded input switching and used film caps and resistors along
with the original 2SC828 transistors. This is a very fluid, thick
sounding overdrive useful with all kinds of amplifiers and other pedals.
The mild rise of the low to mid-gain overdrive gives endless sustain
and a cushy edge to the bite of the distortion. The tone allows a large
range of colorful voicings. Removing the buffers opened the sound up and
gives a a sparkly presence the original didn’t have. This is not a gain
monster but a sustain machine that has a shimmering, warbly character
to it that I really like. Built like a tank inside the etched and
polished box.
