With the capability to record all eight inputs at once plus a separate 2-track stereo mix — essential for efficient editing workflows — in either BWF-compatible WAV or high bit rate MP3 formats, the Zoom F8 bridges the gap between DIY media production and professional video applications. But regardless of whether you're recording a series of individual microphones or capturing both surround sound and stereo feeds simultaneously, the impressive track count is only the beginning of the F8's recording capabilities. An adjustable limiter provides 10dB of extra headroom for each track, highpass filters cut down wind noise, and an optional 6-second pre-record buffer ensures you won't miss a cue. Dual channel recording lets you capture four inputs each on two separate tracks with different settings, and redundant recording to two independent SD/SDHC/SDXC cards (up to 512GB each) plus automatic saving ensures your data is safe, even if disaster strikes.

The Quality I/O You Need
Essential connections for full-scale field recording
Despite its small form factor, the F8 manages to offer an amazing amount of I/O. The star of the show is a set of eight locking Neutrik Combo jacks, which accept both XLR and 1/4" TRS input. Each of these inputs feeds a separate microphone preamplifier spec'd to an impressive -127dBu EIN and capable of providing up to 75dB of gain. There's also individually switchable +24V/+48V phantom power on each mic pre, allowing you to power individual condenser microphones, without wasting battery power. A 10-pin Zoom mic capsule port on the back of the F8 also comes in handy if you want to set up a reference mic directly at the camera, plus there's a slate mic built in. On the output side, a pair of TA3 mini-XLR jacks provides stereo master outs, and a 100mW headphone amplifier delivers enough volume for even the noisiest environments.

That's why we're so happy to offer the Zoom F8. BNC connectors provide integration with standard media rigs and a full range of timecode formats, including dropframe and non-drop settings. The F8 can also jam sync to external devices for field use and applications where cable runs are impossible. And thanks to its precision oscillator, which provides 0.2 ppm accuracy, you're sure to get rock-solid video/audio synchronization with your Zoom F8 multitrack recorder.

Metering is absolutely critical when you're recording in the field, and in poor-visibility environments, the Zoom F8's high-visibility meters and displays are real lifesavers. For starters, the 6-segment LED channel meters are adjustable, so you can make them dim enough to stay subtle in dark locations or bright enough to remain easy to read in full sunlight. The 2.4" LCD, which is switchable between full-color and monochromatic modes, provides you with enough resolution to keep track of all of your input settings, timecode, battery power, master levels, and more. If you need remote metering and control, then you're going to love the F8's Bluetooth capabilities, which let you connect your iOS device for fast and accurate metering plus touch control over all of its major functions, as well as advanced settings such as file name, metadata, and more.

With three ways to power it, the Zoom F8 delivers the portability you'd expect from a professional multitrack field recorder. A 4-pin Hirose connector provides easy compatibility with standard 9-16V DC battery packs, providing a near universal solution for extended shoots and mobile recording applications. Just the same, it's great to know that you can always load the F8 with eight standard AA batteries in a pinch or when run-and-gun recording makes bulky battery packs inconvenient. In fact, you can keep a set of AAs in the F8 and have it switch to internal backup power at a user-definable voltage, and optional headphone power alerts can keep you on top of low-power situations. And when you don't need battery power, you can always switch to the included 12V AC adapter.

Another thing that sets the Zoom F8 apart from comparable multitrack field recorders is the accessories package that it comes with. One of the stars of the included accessories is the camera mount adapter, an item that's a costly after-market accessory for other multitrack field recorders. This bracket attaches directly to the top of the F8 and allows you to mount a DSLR or similar camera above, while the standard 1/4"-20 threading on the bottom of the recorder allows for easy mounting to camera tripods and other hardware. Add an optional Zoom Mic capsule (available right here at Sweetwater), and you've got an amazing on-camera audio setup. There's an inexpensive optional F8 Field Bag available too, which is great for on-the-go recording. Zoom also includes a pair of TA3 to XLR cables for easy playback on stereo speakers. Zoom F8 Sounds great

It may not get 5 stars when compared to something 3-4 times the price, but it definitely deserves it for the price point and what it delivers. I am getting really pristine recordings from these preamps. The headphone monitoring issue is going to be addressed in the next firmware so I won't address it further. The Ipad interface is great and works every time. This will surely change the landscape of field recording. I loved my zoom H6 but this guy is a giant leap forward.
