Stone Deaf FX Warp Drive High Gain Distortion
Stone Deaf has added a high-gain drive pedal to its arsenal and the results couldn’t be more impressive. The parametric filter design that Stone Deaf is known for lends itself extremely well to lower-gain boxes—see also: Fumb, Fig and Blonde, Trashy. So, why not adapt this same tonal control into a searing high-gain box? Does this parameter know no limit?
As you might expect, the filter chews up high gain tone and spits it out with ease, so the Warp Drive’s circuitry adapts to the filter section extremely well. In fact, the Warp Drive may be the last high-gain box you ever buy. Why’s that, you ask? Let’s dig in.
For starters, the Warp control, a.k.a. the gain control, starts at classic rock crunch. Starts. As in, when the gain is set to zero, crunch is what you get. It’s pure gain from there on out, partner. Only the boldest gain explorers can handle the end of this dial.
As for the filter, the Bandwidth rotary switch sets the Q of the filter, and then the Cut/Boost knob adjust, well, the cut or boost at the selected Bandwidth. The Freq then adjusts the frequency of the parametric filter. The result is a wildly expressive tone circuit that aims to please and fires on all cylinders. What’s more, you can connect one of Stone Deaf’s expression pedals and have hands-free control over the Frequency knob, for some wah action.
As is the case with most high-gain pedals, the Warp Drive is noisy at higher gain settings. This is exactly why Stone Deaf thoughtfully included a footswitchable noise gate. This gate is some powerful stuff, boy. At halfway up it will choke out even the most persistent noise. Run the sucker at full bore, see if the noise gate cares. Spoiler: it doesn’t. Get into it.
