The Robert Keely modded BD-2 Freak Fuzz pedal
Features: Increased warmth with smooth mids and highs. Robert Keeley's Freak Fuzz mod of the Boss BD-2 distortion pedal delivers slight assymetrical clipping for musical, second-order harmonic distortion. At very high saturation levels it almost achieves an octave-type effect. The Freak Fuzz BD-2 includes Keeley's signature Phat switch, which gives your sound a mild shot of low end to the low E and A strings of your guitar. Silver mica capacitors in this mod reduce noise levels below what the stock BD-2 puts out. The Freak Fuzz BD-2 also has a Square Wave switch that cuts out some filtering and allows more of its glorious fuzz tones shine through. Every component Keeley adds to the BD-2 Freak Fuzz is of the highest quality. The parts added will increase the warmth of the pedal and add tremendous response to your playing. Film capacitors are used in the tone section to provide the smoothest midrange and highs while increasing the bass response of the pedal. Inherent noise of the box has been greatly reduced. With gain down all the way, the level acts as a clean boost, very transparent. Start adding gain and she goes from mild crunch to massive overdrive, flip the square wave filter off and all hell breaks loose. With a tele driving my vintage traynor YGM-3, the sound was awesome, very responsive to guitar volume and picking force. But I am a bass player, and this box really lets the lows through. Especially with the phat swith up, but even flat, the bass lows still punch through. With bass it can sound much like the overdrive of my YBA-1 vintage traynor tube head, to a very biting fuzz drive. Think of the bass on Zappa's Apostrophe. Honestly I am in the early stages of experimentation but the profound difference between the stock blues driver, and this Keeley mod, especially on bass, prompted this review. Bass felt neutered through the stock BD, but really thumps under all the distortion of the Keeley freak fuzz. Playing a fender Jazz and an Alembic Epic through a vintage traynor YBA-1 and a single 15" EVM This is quoted from Robert Keely: The BD-2 mod is extremely popular — we call it the BD-2 Freak Fuzz. Instead of using the diodes typically used to create the distortion, we use these Germanium transistors (AC-188) as diodes. We drill a whole in the BD-2 and they fit in there perfectly. We use part of these to increase the distortion. Cosmetics changes were added as well. We did a DS-1 MOD for Steve Vai where it has the little flashing light that corresponds to the Distortion. We liked the Cosmetics of this change so much that we added it to the BD-2 and people think it’s the coolest thing visually. Since day one we have also been adding a Bass response Boost to the BD-2 that increases the thickness of the bass. It’s not that the bass response of the BD-2 is bad it’s just that some people have thinner sounding systems than others. Not everyone has that luscious perfect sounding Bass response and the Bass Boost compensates for what some rigs might be lacking. On the left side of the pedal is a Gain Switch. I cut out some of the capacitors that are used in the BD-2 to make it sound less harsh and to reduce some of the gain. I toggle a capacitor value to increase the "edge" and gain to the point of Fuzz. When the pedal is cranked it's much like Santana's tone! THSS: www.music-blvd.com Catalinbread Merkin Fuzz (Fuzzright!)
