the FRM250MF Paul Gilbert Limited Edition guitar largely retains the
look of Paul's three single-coil standard Fireman axe, but to provide
serious beef, Paul snuck in a pair of "stealth" humbuckers in the neck
and bridge positions - stealthiness courtesy of zebra-coiled DiMarzio
Air Classics. At Sweetwater, we adore the sound of late-1950s
humbuckers. Obviously, so does DiMarzio. For their Air Classics, they
nailed the sweetness of the original pickups, but used reliable modern
Alnico 5 magnets, reducing string pull to increase sensitivity and
sustain. The result is a three-dimensional, almost vocal sound that
rockets off the string and rings true as it sustains. The response to
your pick attack is intense, and the harmonics are glorious. Add a
DiMarzio Area 67 single-coil in the middle position and 5-way switching,
and you're talking serious tonal versatility.
