VFE Pedals Dark Horse Hard Edge Distortion

If you’re looking for a distortion pedal that truly runs the gamut from light blues breakup to all-out distorted war, look no further than the VFE Dark Horse. Like its name implies, the Dark Horse is an unexpected box to win it all.


Six controls adorn the face of the Dark Horse—five of them knobs and one of them a toggle switch.


The three main knobs—Level, Comp and Gain—are nearly self-explanatory. The Comp knob is a bit unconventional but not at all tricky; roll it back for sweet singing sustain and forward for face-melting crunch.


The two smaller knobs are Bass and Treble—straightforward in name but they’re actually bands of a Baxandall equalizer; rather than simple filters, they’re two bands of boosting/cutting; both Treble and Bass are capable of being boosted of cut by 15dB. That allows for tons of tonal possibilities.


The toggle switch labeled S-L-A is for clipping diodes. “S” stands for Symmetrical, meaning two diodes of the same type; “L” stands for LED clipping and “A” stands for Asymmetrical—which means one diode of one type and one of another. While not typical, asymmetrical clipping is full of harmonics, lending a distinct flavor.

TrueSoft Bypass Footswitch - True bypass relay with effect-side FET switch




Variable HCC - allows you to fine tune the harmonics, compression, and clipping character of your tone.




Extended Headroom - A simple voltage inverter circuit was used to effectively turn 9V into 18V. No need for special power supplies.




DualMode Switching - DualMode Switching can convert the footswitch into momentary operation. To use, wait 5 seconds, then press the sequence tap+tap+hold until LED flashes




USA Made PCBs - Our circuit boards are made in the USA by Advanced Circuits (large PCB runs) or OSH Park (small PCB runs).




PRP Audio Resistors - VFE used low noise, low inductance resistors made for audio circuits by Precision Resistive Products in the USA.
