Keeley Electronics Son of Fuzz Head

In an age of one-and-done boutique pedal companies, only a handful of circuits are classics. One of them is the Keeley Fuzz Head.


It's
been a decade since the Fuzz Head got any kind of non-cosmetic
touch-up, and now that era can be put to bed. This is the new Keeley Son
of Fuzz Head.


Utilizing the
same differential pair input as its predecessor, the heart and soul of
the pedal remain intact. However, the new version adds a JFET preamp for warm, tube-like saturation at the onset.


Following
that, a germanium gain stage is implemented, for that wooly sound that
only a silicon-germanium hybrid is capable of. Mr. Keeley moved the tone
control to the outside, where it belongs, and included a diode lift
switch, which turns the Son of Fuzz Head into a gnarly overdrive. And
let's be honest—when was the last time you heard a gnarly germanium
overdrive?


Graphics from Calvin
Schenkel, the artist responsible for many of Frank Zappa's album covers,
make this a truly unique Keeley circuit, both inside and out. And it
sounds awesome.
