John Suhr must be a wizard, because his line of Classic J Antique basses are absolutely magical! Basically, he and his team have taken the classic J-style design from the sixties, put a killer light relic job on it, and hot-rodded it with all sorts of upgrades that make life easier for the modern bassist. Each bass starts with a fantastic piece of alder that the team at Suhr finishes with a thin coat of nitrocellulose lacquer to ensure vintage-perfect resonance. Then, they attach a slim vintage-style neck with a 7.25" radius and rolled edges for maximum comfort and plop twenty heavy stainless steel frets into the Indian rosewood fretboard. Then, the bass receives a full PLEK fret dress, which is a huge part of why these instruments play so well. Such precise fretwork allows the player to set the action quite low and still sound full and beefy. So, you can play this thing for hours without getting hand cramps, and you don't have to sacrifice any tone! Speaking of which, let's touch on the pickups. The sixties-style single-coils have the sort of warmth, bite and clarity that has inspired bassists for decades, and the three-knob control configuration lets you cop all sorts of classic sounds. Also, Gotoh bridge lends the bass immense sustain, and it's a breeze to intonate. Finally, the Hipshot tuners keep this bass locked into perfect tune for what seems like forever. Tonal Evaluation
Wow, this is a meaty, beefy bass! Overall, this serial's sonic signature includes dense, powerful midrange along with bright, biting highs and tight, articulate lows. The neck pickup is thumpy and woody, but the top end still growls the way a J-style should--think John Paul Jones's tone on "What is and Should Never Be." The bridge pickup is girthy, but it still snarls in the upper midrange and clanks in the trebles when you dig in--think Entwhistle's tone on "My Generation." Anyone seeking a midrange-focused J-style bass with a bad atittude will love this serial!
