In a world of analog trem pedals, there have been several attempts at seizing the crown, with an unquestioned leader yet to be found. Along came the Frantone Vibutron and the brass ring was grabbed. Eventually, the supply dried up (try finding a used one) as Frantone faded. Now that Fran has returned, so has the Vibutron. It's your lucky day.
The Vibutron is about as no-nonsense as trem gets. And when your features are this simple, it had better sound good. It does. In fact, the Vibutron sounds very much like your amp's tremolo, but with a kicker: it's not just sine wave trem here—triangle and square are also represented.
The human ear perceives sound logarithmically and as such, the sine wave trem most sounds like true volume modulation—an even-keeled sweep that is ripe with a little tonal enhancement to offset any perceived volume loss. It's magic.
Triangle wave trem at least looks most like what we might perceive as steady volume modulation if it weren't for those pesky logarithms. As such, it's a little more "snappy" at the peaks for a unique flavor of trem.
Frantone's square wave mode is the real star, because unlike almost every square wave trem, this one is actually musical. The Vibutron rewards you with a buttery modulation that bests anything in its class.
Rate and Depth controls are standard, and both have incredibly wide ranges, with the Depth control functioning very much like a mix control. With Depth rolled all the way back, the Vibutron turns into a slightly compressed tonal enhancement device. Sounding great at all possible settings is par for the course with Frantone products and the Vibutron is no exception.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Frantone pedal without obsessive engineering throughout, including carefully curated part selection down to the jacks and LED bezel. Rock with confidence.
