Gurus Amps Sinusoid Optical Tremolo and Spring Reverb
As lovers of tube amps, we’ve all lusted after reverb and tremolo since they were offered as part of old amps of yore. Like the amps themselves, these two effects were built on the backs of other primitive things: tubes and springs. Old amps harnessed the power of these technologies and turned them into musical beings.
Springs and transducers became reverb, and tubes turned into tremolo. It was quite a sight in those days, and everyone had to have them. Still, even in the current year, purists from decades past will point at today’s offerings and turn up their noses. They’ll point to those old amps and say “nothing beats that.” From a tonal standpoint, they are right. At least one of these—spring reverb—can only be accomplished by analog means with an apparatus that takes up a lot of space. There are no two ways about it.
Enter: the Gurus Sinusoid. This Italian-made tone machine gives you a real analog reverb and pairs it with a real tube-based tremolo. This is made possible by onboard valves and spring tanks, just like those old amps. When you give it a tap with your foot, it rattles just like an old amp.
Two separate sides deliver the tube trem and reverb, each individually footswitchable. The trem side delivers sine-wave trem with Speed and Intensity controls just like a Fender blackface amp, and there’s one Reverb knob. A master volume control rounds out the control set, with Magic Eye meters on both sides: Rate on the trem side and input level on the ‘verb side. Both channels are equipped with Remote jacks for use with external switchers, if you’d rather not step on your pedal.
The Sinusoid looks just as slick as it sounds, with laser-etched faceplates and labels—a true feat of both design and tone. The enclosure is stout enough for road use, and rugged enough to be thrown on a pedalboard night in and night out. Feed it into an ultra-clean amp for the best of real amp reverb and trem.
