When talking about pedals, headroom is a concept most often overlooked. In fact, you may have not heard it at all, so here goes nothing.
Headroom is that magical characteristic that allows a device to take on a metric ton of gain without clipping or distortion in an unmusical way. Typically, we like a ton of it, especially when this device is meant to be placed at the end of a signal chain. Amps have it, and the ones equipped with more of it are typically thought of as amps that “take pedals well.”
The same goes for pedals, and the operating voltage is key. Some pedals run on 18 volts and promise superior headroom, and for the most part, they deliver. But for you truly deranged gain addicts (you know who you are), 18 volts just isn’t enough. How about 30?
Yes, the Zola is a booster and buffer equipped with a 30-volt operating voltage (from a standard nine-volt supply) for superior headroom in the face of the headiest gain boxes. And because it’s a booster, you can place it all the way at the end of your chain where it bears the brunt of your pedalboard and preps it for the amp. A switchable buffer is also in play for restoring any high-end lost by long cable runs. And a two-band EQ lets you shape the load of pedals before it as you see fit.
