By now, Robert Keeley’s fuzz pedigree should not be questioned, with his penchant for rare parts and exquisite tone firmly within the spotlight. With that said, he asks you to bow down at the altar of the Holy Fuzz, his limited-edition gated fuzz unit.
The Holy Fuzz began its life as a Tone Bender MKIII variant, and using a cache of NOS Mullard-branded OC75 transistors, set about recreating it. But there was a hiccup in the machine, and it’s called circuit bending.
For those not in the know, “circuit bending” is the process of poking around in a circuit and joining unlikely pieces together. If the junction yields an interesting result, it is integrated into the circuit. Think of it as an electronic sonic treasure hunt.
X marked the spot on the Holy Fuzz when Keeley and company discovered a crucial junction that instituted a gnarly gating effect. This was rigged to a switchable potentiometer and the result was rather Holy.
This Gating knob is wired to a switch so when the knob is all the way down, the gate circuit is completely out of the circuit. With the gating off, the pedal becomes an expertly voiced Tone Bender MKIII with some extra hair. Turn the gate circuit on and you have a one-way warp pipe ticket to the Mushroom Kingdom. Giddyup.
