Among the rarest Muff types, the “Civil War” type was the first Russian Muff iteration and is the rarest as well. It’s noted for having a ton of low end and some overdrive-like characteristics, depending on which pickup you’re using. Wren and Cuff gives us the true Civil War experience with the Box of War. This pedal accurately captures everything we love about Civil War-era Muffs—the same tonal profile and all—without any of the quirks. Battery-only operation, fragile wiring, enormous, space-eating design—all gone. The small footprint of the Box of War gives you that sound with room for two or three other pedals.
The Civil War variant is known for its crunchy tones and darker character. No two were exactly alike, since these pedals were produced with wide-tolerance parts and with whatever was available.
