The Caveman Overdrive from newcomer Oddfellow FX might hold the title of rookie, but it swings for the fences like a seasoned veteran. The company itself proclaims a tone hound’s “pursuit [to be] over” upon hearing the Caveman, and after a little time playing it, that’s pretty tough to argue.
The controls are pretty straightforward—Volume, Tone and Drive—just like all the greats. Unlike most of the other greats in this field however, the Caveman is an overdrive multitool in just three knobs and two switches. No longer must a player shop for 31 flavors of drive, the Caveman can be as transparent or as over the top as any player would ever want. Even a subtle nudge of the Gain knob can send the Caveman into unfamiliar territory; the range must be heard to be believed.
A welcome fact is that the Caveman sounds just as home on humbuckers as it does on single coils, and everything in between. Don't shy away from feeding the Caveman as hot a pickup as you have in your arsenal.
The boost section on the Caveman is subtle yet powerful. Pressing the corresponding footswitch increases gain with a subtle volume jump, basting your signal in rich harmonics. We won’t be upset if you leave the boost on all the time.
Truly, the Caveman Overdrive excels at “amp-like” tones. But, which amp? Your amp. Even with the gain dimed, the Caveman sounds like your amp, on eleven. It’s easy to say that the Caveman is Nigel Tufnel approved.
The Caveman is wired for true bypass and accepts a 2.1mm 9v center-negative Boss-style power adapter. The current draw is low: isolated power supply-ready!
