The king of marginal gains has returned to the drawing board and emerged with the Chain Home. You see, Adrian Thorpe is a bit of a vintage stompbox nut. And though many classics were crafted in the first wave of guitar pedals, seldom was as much love applied to the circuits as builders of today can provide. As children of the original effects pioneers, we pay homage to the classics. This is the Chain Home’s genesis.
The Chain Home is a reimagining of the classic Vox plug-in effect, the Repeat Percussions tremolo. In the days of effects yore, tremolo was done with tubes, producing a smooth sine wave trem or a phase-like harmonic trem. When Vox used a 2n2646 pulse generator in a tremolo circuit, the result was magical. Weird, but magical. It produced a reverse sawtooth wave, unlike anything on the market.
This same part is also the heart of the Chain Home—a real-deal NOS Motorola 2n2646 runs the show here. The waveform has been tamed a bit—it’s about as amp-like as a Repeat Percussions box gets. While the original has Rate and Depth, the Chain Home gives extended ranges of each plus a couple extra features.
Because tremolo is often perceived as having a volume drop, the Chain Home has an onboard boost to juice the front end of even the most stoic amplifier. It’s made with a Burr-Brown chip, the same kind that audiophiles coo over in hi-fi consoles. This boost is a real rip-snorter, achieving unity at 8:00 and pummeling your amp with sweet, rich gain beyond that. You can access the boost by simply turning the Depth knob all the way down.
Because tremolos also perceivably scoop your low-end out, the Tone knob helps to add it back in with a simple twist. As you might expect, using this in conjunction with the boost is a window-rattling experience in the best way.
Like each and every Thorpy stompbox, the Chain home is crafted with high-quality everything, including precision resistors, high-end capacitors and a gold-plated circuit board for supreme quality above all else.
