When Dwarfcraft released the Robot Devil, it was one of the loudest pedals ever, and it didn’t have a volume control. The soul of the Robot Devil now lives onward in the Gears, and it has been expanded greatly.
The Gears now features seven knobs instead of three, and yes, one is Volume. The heart of the gears is the clock divider circuit, which transforms your signal to a blistering octave-down fuzz with a couple knob turns. There are knobs for 1, /2 and /4 which characterizes the divider portion. There are also knobs for Drive, Freq[uency] and Rez[onance] which help players dial in just the right amount of fuzziness, from a mild overdrive up through a gargling robot.
There’s now a jack for an expression pedal that controls the Freq knob, and this opens Gears up substantially. If the pedal had no jack, you’d wish it offered the ability to control this particular knob hands-free, as it dramatically changes the sound when manipulated in real time.
