Death by Audio is known for its wildly inventive noise boxes, and the Evil Filter may represent peak DBA. It offers a variety of features with one common goal: achieve the most out-of-this-world all-analog tones that will turn heads of the audience. Or smash them in.
The circuit begins with the auxiliary: the Evil Fuzz. There’s just one knob and an intensity switch. Knowing Death By Audio , you’d expect the fuzz to be high-output and the intensity switch to range from “over the top” to “really over the top,” and you’d be right on the money. There is a reason for this fuzz madness, and it comes in the form of the second footswitch, the Evil Filter itself.
The filter section gets a whole mess of controls, from a super-deep Frequency knob that ranges from 0 to 10.5kHz and a supercharged Resonance control. There’s even a switch that increases the range of the Resonance control for extended madness. A Filter Selector switch switches between High Pass, Band Pass and Low Pass settings.
An expression (or CV) jack takes hands-free control over the Frequency knob, for psychotic filter sweeps of all types. Switch the filter type to Band Pass for a wah pedal only the folks at DBA could dream up.
The real magic is the interplay between the massive fuzz circuit and the fragile filter. They collide into a mess of gain and sputtering, and this combines with the expression pedal in the best way possible. Welcome to the dark side.
