Since boutique effects became "a thing," Brian Wampler has been bringing you the best of the best. And in that time, he's transitioned out of dirt pedals and into everything else. Because he's one of the world's most premier pedal designers, it goes without saying that, by extension, all the non-dirt is fantastic as well. Fortunately, that's correct. The Faux Tape Echo V2 is evidence of that.
Right out of the box, the Faux Tape Echo sounds like you'd expect a real unit to sound: moody, rich and alive with tone. Well, you'll certainly find that here, along with a host of features that you only wish those old machines had.
For starters, the unit comes equipped with a Tap Tempo footswitch that lets you dial in the space between repeats without using your hands. Pretty cool indeed, but the V2 lets you control all that, along with programmable subdivisions. Now, tapping in quarter-note delays can mean all kinds of different time measures, depending on where you set the subdivisions with the pushbutton switch.
The modulation section lets you dial in the movement of the virtual tape reels, from tape echo sounds that emulate a unit that just rolled off the production line with pristine tape-style repeats, all the way to the broken-down-yet-still-usable studio doorstop that gives warbly, modulated repeats. Turning these knobs down brings the modulation out of the circuit, so there are no switches to flick.
Top-to-bottom, the Faux Tape Echo V2 delivers the goods from soft-touch relay-based true-bypass switching to an optimized circuit board that defeats any high noise floor. All of this adds up to one of the finest simulated tape echo pedals anywhere.
