Anasounds Utopia Delay
Tape echo is a sound that many pedals claim to capture, but very few actually do. It’s one thing to make a delay dark and then just call it a tape echo, but it’s another thing to actually nail it. The problem is that most companies that do nail it require quite a bit of real estate or are completely lacking in the features department.
The Anasounds Utopia combines all of these items: an expansive feature set, compact size and great tone. As a bonus, the thing looks like a million bucks with a sound to match.
The front of the Utopia contains all the options that you’d expect from a delay pedal, with delay time (DLY), feedback (RPT) and MIX. There’s also a handy toggle switch for Mod[ulation], which toggles the repeat modulation on and off. More on that later.
Three controls may seem a meager collection, but these primary controls are complemented by another full set under the hood. When removing the back panel, there are three trimpots and another switch.
The switch changes the maximum delay time from 400 to 600 milliseconds, lightly modifying the delay character while giving you 50 percent more time.
The trimpots consist of two modulation controls—Depth and Rate—that engage a liquid modulation that can envelop the repeats with glassy chorus tones of any amount.
The final trimpot is simply labeled Tone, but it does so much more than that. This trimpot is essentially the pedal’s “flavor selector,” taking the Utopia from clean digital-sounding delay to a dirty tape echo found in grandpa’s attic, and everything in between.
