The fresh-for-2018 Gibson ES-335 "Big Block" is the semi-hollowbody equivalent of a Camaro SS: a tricked-out, muscular take on an American classic with a track record for legendary performance. While these guitars definitely can't go from zero to sixty in under five seconds, Gibson Memphis did draw inspiration from muscle car culture while designing them. Specifically, they looked at the way hot rod enthusiasts put their own unique stamp on their vehicles by customizing them. So, Gibson pulled design elements from several different classic semi-hollows to craft a truly singular 335 for 2018. They borrowed vintage slim-taper horns from early 335s for a sleek look, and they used ES-345 multi-ply binding to evoke the racing stripes that often graced high-end Detroit steel like the Pontiac GTO or Dodge Challenger. Appropriately, this guitar also comes equipped with top-of-the-line "big block" ES-355 inlays, which look neck-snappingly gorgeous against the backdrop of the dark rosewood fretboard. The brand-new Classic White, Emerald Green Metallic, and Wood Rose Metallic finishes would all look right at home if they were painted on an old Mustang, too. But, as any racer can tell you, a good-looking ride will only take you so far if it doesn't go fast when the light turns green. Thankfully, the Memphis Historic Spec humbuckers in these 335s are the sonic equivalent of a 396 V8--big and beefy with a top-end that purrs like a kitten. Also, the neck's rounded "C" profile plays fast enough that you may even find yourself eyeing the track record!
