Most envelope filters operate with well, one envelope. Depending on your dynamics, you get varying degrees of “bow-wow” and “chicka-chicka” no matter what you do. It’s expressive, sure, but is it really THAT expressive? Sort of.

The all-analog Subdecay Vocawah contains two filters running in parallel, turned differently so that your guitar signal hits both at once. The result is a super-expressive vocal-like envelope filter that twists and turns to suit your needs and hangs on your every note. It puts you in the driver’s seat instead of the passenger’s seat.

The Vocawah has two settings and two knobs—easy to dial in, yet there are many settings to unpack. Two filter categories are selectable with the central toggle switch—Low Pass and Band Pass. Subdecay suggests that the Low Pass setting is best suited for bass and the Band Pass best suited for guitar; especially when playing with overdrive pedals. We suggest you experiment.

The Manual control sets the frequency of each filter, or the opening point, if you will. You can set this for a dubby sweep by keeping the knob low or mega-funk when set high.

The Depth control adjusts the sensitivity of both filters, allowing either feather-soft touches or hard picking to trigger the effect. Dialing the Depth in is key to achieving a great
filter effect, adjusting it to how hard you tend to play for maximum efficiency.
