EarthQuaker Devices Custom Afterneath Special Edition Color
It’s rare to find a reverb that doesn’t attempt to emulate a certain device or space. Many manufacturers are bent on coming up another iteration of a spring tank. Earthquaker, however, has created a new reverb that isn’t based on a certain space, but rather on space, the abstract concept. That pedal is the Afterneath.
Some controls on the Afterneath may seem foreign for a standard reverb pedal. Thing is, the Afterneath is not a standard reverb pedal. In fact, dialing in an authentic spring may prove more laborious than expected. Make no mistake, it’s in there, but the Afterneath is so much more.
Let’s start with the Drag control. The Afterneath is made up of several short delay lines chained together, and the Drag knob spaces these lines further and further apart, creating a unique separation effect unlike anything heard in other reverbs.
The Reflect knob controls the amount of feedback each of these delay lines receives. As expected, when Drag and Reflect are adjusted with the other in mind, magical things happen. The Reflect control will self-oscillate when cranked.
The Dampen control acts as sort of a more-dramatic tone knob, and the Diffuse control changes the “spread” of the reverb; counter clockwise is narrow, clockwise is big and lush.
The Length control really ties it all together, as when maxed, the reverb seems to go on forever. Turning the Drag knob while playing with maximum Length may cause severe inspiration. You should absolutely try it.
The Afterneath is wired for true bypass and accepts a 2.1mm 9v center-negative Boss-style power adapter. The current draw is 65mA: isolated power supply-ready!
